About us

This website has been especially created for the information needs of patients with peritoneal cancer, their families and doctors.
In some of these patients, the metastases will be limited to the peritoneal surface and the liver.  When the liver metastases originate in the colon and can be surgically removed, they are practically treatable.
Full recovery is possible for a certain group of  patients with peritoneal metastases. In order for this to be achieved, the metastases should be removed completely,  after  which the stomach should be treated with a a chemotherapeutic substance at a temperature, which is higher than usual -  42-43 C.
This combined therapy is known as Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy  (HIPEC).
This combined approach is most successful when the peritoneal metastses are diagnosed earlier. Unfortunately, this is not always possible with the methods of medical imaging that we use today.
Regular prophylaxis of the patients who are at a higher risk for peritoneal carcinomatosis,  provides them with better recovery chances.
Patients at a higher risk are those with advanced tumors, encompassing the entire colon surface, presence of  mucinous component in the histology, peritoneal smear which has tested positive for tumor cells, peritoneal carcinomatosis, which is visible during the operation, metastases in the ovaries in women.
Our team, currently working at University Hospital “Pulmed” in Plovdiv, is starting a program for treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis.
This program is compliant with similar programs, integrated in European centers for treatment of peritoneal carcinomatisis.
